“Thief Is Scolding Chowkidaar”: BC, AD to mahamilavat – PM Modi took a swipe at Congress

modi-7NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hit out at Congress, during the reply to a debate on Motion of Thanks to President’s address in Lok Sabha. Giving meaning to new acronyms for ‘BC’ and ‘AD’ (the two time periods denoted in the Julian and Gregorian calendars), the PM said the opposition party has known only two phases — ‘Before Congress’ and ‘After Dynasty’. In a long reply to the debate, Modi said: “When we speak about history, we use BC and AD. We heard speeches which kept mentioning the periods from 1947 to 2014.”

“BC and AD have their meanings. BC means ‘Before Congress’ which means there was nothing before the Congress came to power and AD ‘After Dynasty’ which means whatever happened was after the dynasty,” Modi said. Speaking about Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi’s barbs over the Rafale jet deal. “I am levelling a serious allegation,” he said in the Lok Sabha. Accusing the Congress of being “insensitive” towards the armed forces, he said, “The Army has seen the days when the officers did not even have bullet-proof jackets to conduct surgical strikes… I am not talking about weaponry here. These are basic facilities”.”I want to say it on the floor of Parliament that the Congress doesn’t want our armed forces to be strong.
“The nation will not forgive you for this sin,” the Prime Minister said and added: “They (Congress) are surprised that there is a defence deal without kickbacks… they assume that a defence deal cannot happen without commission.”In a frontal attack on the Congress, the PM alleged that those who imposed Emergency, “bullied” the judiciary and insulted the Army were accusing him of destroying institutions. Taking a jibe at attempts to forge a grand alliance of opposition parties (mahagathbandhan) to take on the BJP, the PM said people do not want a “mahamilavat” (highly adulterated) government as they have witnessed how the NDA government which has a majority can deliver.
“Congress imposed Emergency, but they say Modi is destroying institutions. Congress insults Army, calls the Army chief a ‘goonda’ but they say Modi is destroying institutions,” the PM said.Launching a no-holds-barred attack, the PM further accused the Congress of defaming the nation. “In discussing Modi and in discussing BJP, they end up defaming the nation. That is why their leaders go to London and do press conferences to show India in a bad light,” the PM said.
PM Modi’s remarks were apparently in response to a news conference in London by a self-proclaimed cyber expert Syed Shuja, who had alleged that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were hacked at the time of the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. Notably, the last month’s conference was attended by Congress leader Kapil Sibal in “personal capacity”.The PM further said  “the nation has put me in this position to end corruption”.
PM Modi said their idea of Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) is a Maha Milavat (Grand Adulteration) and the people are aware of it. The Prime Minister also retorted to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s favourite slogan with a tweak of a well-known Hindi proverb. “The thief is scolding the chowkidar (watchman),” he said. He said, “In 2014, for the first time in 30 years, the people gave India its first full majority government. Now the Maha-Milawat (Grand Adulteration) is about to come”.As the opposition broke into loud protests, he said, “The public knows what happens when there is a milawat ki sarkar (adulterated government)”. Then, indicating the treasury benches, he said, “Don’t worry, the Grand Adulteration people won’t come here.”
“The voters understand how a “maha milavat” government can be harmful for the country… When the government has majority, the performance is undoubtedly different,” he said. Then, in a dig at the 23-party Opposition rally in Kolkata, he said, “The voters do not want a “Maha Milavat” government of those who assembled in Kolkata”.In what could be his last speech from the floor of the house before the national elections are declared, PM Modi put Congress through the shredder — claiming Indira Gandhi dismissed elected governments “over 50 times”, defence deals with “Chachas and Mamas”, and “benami properties” abroad, an indirect reference to Robert Vadra.
Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s brother-in-law, businessman Robert Vadra, is being questioned by the authorities in a money laundering case for a second day today.Hitting out at Mr Gandhi for his allegations on the Rafale fighter jet deal, PM Modi said the Congress did not wish to see the country’s armed forces strong. “I wondered why they speak lies on Rafale with such confidence. Then I realised because they know in all their years in power there hasn’t been a single honest defence deal. Some mama, some chacha kept coming in,” he said.
Being inducted into the Congress, PM Modi said, was considered to be “akin to suicide” by BR Ambedkar. The BJP slogan of “Congress Mukt Bharat (Congress-free India)” was not his slogan, he added, “I am just fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi’s wishes”.(With Agency Inputs ).
