“Opposition will not remain united in future, BJP is a strong organization”-P Chidambaram
NEW DELHI : Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram’s comment has put the opposition, especially the Congress, in a defensive position. Speaking at a program in Delhi, he made a prediction about the “Congress India Block”.
Chidambaram said- ‘Opposition will not remain united in future, BJP is a formidable organization’. Even Rahul Gandhi’s close aides know that Congress has no future!”
BJP’s Pradeep Bhandari shared a video of Congress MP Chidambaram’s remarks on Twitter, which he said on Twitter, “The BJP is a strong party because it believes in strong values/principles of India First, and cares for all Indians – and therefore has the support of most Indians.”
Neither the Congress nor Mr Chidambaram has responded so far. The controversy began on Thursday at the launch of a book – ‘Contesting Democratic Deficit’ – co-authored by Congress’ Salman Khurshid, when Chidambaram admitted uncertainty over the India Bloc. Mr Chidambaram said “The future is not as bright as Mr Mrutyunjay Singh Yadav (the other co-author) says. He feels that the India Alliance is still intact. I am not sure. Maybe Salman can answer… because he was part of the India Alliance negotiation team. “If the India alliance is fully intact… I will be very, very happy, but it looks weak.”
After a momentary optimistic note, however, Chidambaram warned the Congress – and other opposition parties not aligned with the BJP – that now is the time to act. “…In my experience, in my experience of reading history, no political party has been as organised as the BJP. It is formidable in every department,” he said. “It is not (just) another political party…”
Bihar, Bengal, Tamil Nadu: India’s test The warning comes just months ahead of crucial state elections that could reshape the country’s political landscape. Bihar will vote in the second half of 2025. Bengal and Tamil Nadu will vote in 2026, and Uttar Pradesh will vote in 2027. And Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will vote in 2028. The first four are crucial; UP and Bihar are Hindi heartland states ruled by the BJP and its ally, Nitish Kumar’s JDU, while Bengal and Tamil Nadu are among the handful of states that have consistently rejected the saffron party’s hawkish intransigence since Mr Modi came to power in 2014. A victory in either or both of these will fulfil the BJP’s goal of dominating Indian politics at the federal and state levels and possibly put the final nail in the opposition’s coffin, Chidambaram said at a book launch.
“India Alliance was formed because we recognised the fact that we need alliances in this fight. We even went out of our way to form an alliance. An alliance is needed… but it has to be a good alliance…” The group has, however, had mixed success, with more defeats than wins and members unhappy with the Congress leadership and clearly reluctant to share seats with state or regional allies.
This is not the first time that Chidambaram has made a controversial choice on opposition unity. Earlier in his weekly column in Indian Express, Chidambaram has written that PM Modi’s policies are being praised amidst the ceasefire with Pakistan. Congress leader Chidambaram has also praised PM Modi’s war policy. He has praised PM Modi’s leadership ability. He has described the response given by India to Pakistan under PM Modi as intelligent and balanced. Chidambaram has described this action as a wise step by Prime Minister Modi.
