MTNL launches nation wide free roaming

images [1]NEW DELHI: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, MTNL, today launched nation wide free roaming. Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad made this announcement during celebration of Good Governance Week organised by Department of Electronic and Information and Technology.
The Mumbai and Delhi based public sector telecom company will provide free incoming roaming service from Friday to its subscribers across the country.
The BSNL is already providing free roaming services to its subscribers. Mr Prasad also announced that the government will install Wi-Fi at 2 thousand and 5 hundred locations in different parts of the country by March next year. The Minister also inaugurated wi-fi hotspots at ‘Har Ki Pauri’ in Haridwar and Dargah Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan through remote control.
IT Minister also assured that the government will launch payment banks of India Postal department in March 2017. He said the world bank and other international banks are contemplating to finance these payment banks.
These entities will offer most of the services offered by commercial banks, except for loans and credit card products. The Reserve Bank granted in-principle approval to 11 applicants, including postal department in August to set up payments banks.
During the programme the government has also launched 23 news products and e-services to promoter digital infrastructures and IT enabled services in the country.
These schemes includes National Centre of Geo-Infromatics, e-payments Portal, All India BPO Promotion Scheme. Speaking in the programme, Mr Shankar Prasad said, all these schemes are the game changer in the country.
He added that government is committed towards the successful implementation of Digital India which would help to transform India into a truly digitally empowered society and knowledge economy in 21st century.
