Meghalaya BJP Leader Bernard N Marak Arrested from UP for ‘Running Sex Racket’

NEW DELHI : Meghalaya BJP vice-president Bernard N Marak, accused of operating a sex racket at his farmhouse in Tura in West Garo Hills district, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. The police, earlier in the day, issued a look-out notice against Marak, a former militant leader, who was absconding following a police raid at his farmhouse. The BJP Leader was stopped by the UP police during a nationwide alert for his arrest by Meghalaya police, for which they were conducting checking of vehicles along the national highway.

On Saturday last week, six minors were rescued from Marak’s farmhouse, named Rimpu Bagan, and 73 people were arrested, and since then Marak was absconding. Police had said they rescued the minors based on a tip-off, and also seized hundreds of liquor bottles and condoms. Several cars were also recovered from the farmhouse.A court in Tura had on Monday issued a non-bailable warrant of arrest against the BJP leader.
The BJP is a part of the state’s ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s NPP.
Police said Marak was asked to cooperate in the probe but is evading the investigators.The arrest came hours after Meghalaya Police put out a lookout notice for the BJP leader. Yesterday, a Tura court had issued a non-bailable warrant against the BJP leader.

Five children, locked up at a resort in Tura owned by Marak, were rescued on Saturday, the police said. Claiming that a “brothel” was being operated from the place, they said the raid also led to the detention of 47 young men and 26 women — many of them found unclothed and drunk.
