Mamata plays anti-BJP card on Darjeeling, plays up `Bengal division’ sentiment

KOLKATA:  For a change, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress decided to play up `division of Bengal in Telengana-style’ against BJP and also on already weakened Congress in the State.“We all know what these parties did on Telengana issue and how divided Andhra…, but at no cost we’ll have it in Bengal,’’ said Mamata Banerjee at a gathering in Darjeeling, as she launched a campaign for her party candidate Baichung Bhutia.mamta-14 [1] What weighed heavily against BJP has been, its electoral tie-up with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) which openly pleaded for a separate Gorkha Land and didn’t quite reconciled to an autonomous hill status as agreed by TMC Government and GJM earlier.According to political commentators, while TMC leader shifted out of BJP and its prime ministerial candidate representing `a communal face,’ she cleverly enough played up a new political line which is expected to wipe up a popular anti-BJP state-wide sentiment. Incidentally, the GJM isn’t clean either, its leader is facing a large number of criminal cases, allegedly murders of another Gorkha political leader Madan Tamang in broad day light in Darjeeling in 2010!What apparently encouraged Mamata Banerjee has been `banished’ Subhash Ghiesing, leader of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) joining her in election as ally! “Though Narendra Modi, who recently visited North Bengal and slammed Banerjee’s poribortan (change) as `no change,’ he didn’t give any assurance to GJM chief Bimal Gurung that if NDA comes to power he would work on next partition of Bengal.’’“It might  immediately rescue TMC in Darjeeling, but Banerjee’s recent rebellion against Election Commission and with a hurried retreat by agreeing with EC ordered transfers, there’s no doubt would result in a state-wide loss of face for TMC and it might affect TMC prospects,’’ he added. Quick to react was State Congress chief Adhir Chowdhury. Addressing a press meet at Calcutta Press Club today, Choudhury said: “She understood where she stands now, so she rebelled against EC.’’And Partha Chaterjee, a top TMC leader, came to old conspiracy theory by `BJP-Congress-CPI(M)’ of his leader Mamata Banerjee. And re-partition theory would work, “but more solid strategy required for TMC to get rid of emerging threat BJP cutting votes to the disadvantage of Banerjee and her party,’’ said a Congress leader.
