Maintaining linguistic diversity is most important Says theatre personality Mahesh Dattani
NEW DELHI : prominent playwright and theatre personality Mahesh Dattani said that writers are craftsmen of words and they have an important role in preserving the linguistic diversity of our country.
This diversity is also our national identity and it is important to preserve and protect it.
Referring to India’s linguistic richness, he said that there are very few places in the world where such important awards or literary festivals are organized in so many languages. Comparing the ceremony to Oscar, he said that its identity is dazzling while here the identity is dignified simplicity. Mahesh Datani was speaking at an event organised to felicitate the winners of Sahitya Akademi Awards 2024 at Sahitya Akademi’s Sahityotsav 2025, here today. Pointing out the important role of translation in preserving this linguistic diversity, he stressed on increasing it.
We have a tradition of calling a writer Prajapati because he creates a parallel world.
The range of sensitivity of our writers is very wide and this Sahitya Utsav or this award presentation ceremony is a celebration of Indian creativity he said.
On the second day of Sahitya Akademi’s Sahitya Utsav 2025, the winners of Sahitya Akademi Awards 2024 were honoured at Kamani Auditorium today. In her concluding statement, Vice President of Sahitya Akademi, Kumud Sharma said that a writer is a seeker and in his creative process, forgetting everything, he spreads many colors for the betterment of the society but the best colour in it is that of humanity.
Earlier, in his welcome statement, Secretary of the Akademi, K. Srinivas Rao said that every award gives strength to the writer and connects him with a large reader community. These awards give new energy to a true writer in his creative journey.
