LG likely to recommend fresh polls in Delhi this week

jang [1]NEW DELHI : Delhi may see fresh Assembly Elections soon as the Lieutenant-Governor, Najeeb Jung, is likely to recommend the same to President Pranab Mukherjee this week. As per a report in an English daily, LG Jung will this week send a report to the President briefing him about the status of the Legislative Assembly.
He is also expected to list out different options for forming government in the capital. It may be noted that the Supreme Court will on September 9 resume hearing on a petition filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seeking dissolution of the Delhi Assembly. The report quoted sources as saying that the LG will make two recommendations before the President – either invite BJP – the single-largest party in the Assembly – to form the government or call fresh elections.
Delhi has been under President’s rule since February when AAP leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned. The President will forward the report to the Home Minister who will then bring it up before the Union Cabinet. The Cabinet, sources said, is likely to pick the option of fresh polls and the same could take place in January next year. At present, the BJP has 28 MLAs. The party had won 31 seats in the 70-member Assembly in polls last December but three of its legislators – Harsh Vardhan, Ramesh Bidhuri and Pervesh Verma – were elected to the Lok Sabha in the General Elections in April-May this year.
