NEW DELHI : Violence swept the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday as several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the varsity campus with wooden and metal rods.
Two officer-bearers of the Jawaharal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh – who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod, received severe injuries. They accused RSS’ student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for the rampant violence in the campus.

“I have been brutally beaten up by masked people. I don’t know who they were,” Ghosh said as she broke into tears while blood flowed profusely from her head. .The incident took place during a march in the varsity around 5pm when masked individuals with rods entered Sabarmati hostel.

A video showed blood dripping from Ghosh’s head after she was ruthlessly thrashed. “I’ve been brutally attacked by those who were masked. I don’t know, I have been bleeding. I am not even in a condition to talk. I was brutally beaten up,” the JNUSU president said, following which she was rushed to hospital. A professor, Sucharita Sen, has also been admitted to AIIMS with head injury.

According to eyewitnesses 50-odd goons entered the campus around 6.30 pm. Terrified students were phoning professors for help, a professor told NDTV.  Accusing the ABVP of working in tandem with outsiders who arrived armed on campus, Saket Moon, Vice-President of the students union, claimed that the mob was going from room to room “indiscriminately attacking students”. Through it, security guards remained “mute spectators”, he said.

In a statement, the Students’ Union alleged that “ABVP had been attacking students who are peacefully protesting against massive fee hike in JNU”. “Yesterday (Saturday) a mob led by Ritwik Raj who is councillor from School of International Studies belonging to ABVP attacked students. Then they attacked JNUSU President and General Secretary Aishe and Satish and other students.

Dripta a 1st year MA student leg was broken due to ABVP violence. Today they shamelessly attacked students again injuring a student from JNU’s Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health,” JNUSU’s statement read. Some students claimed that DUSU president from ABVP, Satender Awana, was also seen on the campus.
Countering JNUSU’s claims, ABVP put out images alleging that “leftist goons proceeded with unimaginable violence on ABVP activists of JNU”. 7 ambulances sent to JNU to provide help for injured students and professors.
JNUSU said the administration used “masked” security guards to attack students. “They were shamefully wearing masks. JNUSU president was openly slapped by one of the security guards,” alleged the students’ union, which has called for a boycott of the process over the increase in hostel fees.
“ABVP in police presence is moving around with lathis, rods, hammers with their faces under masks. They are pelting bricks, climbing over walls and getting into hostels and beating up students. Several teachers and students have also been beaten up.

JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh has been brutally attacked and her head is bleeding very badly. Students are trying to save themsel while the police is complicit in their crimes, it is taking the orders from Sanghi Professors, forcing students to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai slogans!” the students union said in a statement.
ABVP has denied the allegations. “The students were attacked by students of AFSI, AISA and DSF. At least 15 students  were injured,” it said in a statement.
A professor, Atul Sood, told “The mob threw huge stones and entered hostels, vandalising property… These were not small stones, these were big stones that could have broken our skulls. I fell on the side and when I came out, I saw cars completely vandalised including my car.”
. These are unknown ABVP goons, not all are students, they have covered their faces, and they are moving towards the hotels near the West Gate. Stay alert. Make human chains. Protect each other.”
“This is an attack right under the nose of Delhi police…this was an attack on the university,” said Yogendra Yadav . He also claimed that the police, according to his information, had been present all along at the gate of the university but did not act. “It is beyond shocking,” he said.
