Chile to back India’s membership in UN Security Council

DVRKfbQW0AA0wmC NEW DELHI : Acknowledging Chile`s support for India`s candidature for a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), particularly her support for India’s candidate,
Judge Dalveer Bhandari for reelection to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a delegation expressed the hope that Chile would extend their support  for India’s candidature for a non permanent
seat in the UNSC for the 2021-22 period.

Chile stressed on Strengthening Cooperation in Trade, Commerce, Renewable Energy, Space and Defence Sectors.A seven Member Parliamentary Delegation from the Republic of Chile headed by Fidel Espinoza, President of the Chamber of deputies of National Congress of Chile called on the Vice-President of India and Chairman, Rajya Sabha, M Venkaiah Naidu.

Mr Naidu stated that both India and Chile have friendly relationships and democracy is an important commonality between the two countries.
He congratulated Chile for successfully carrying out important exercise of the presidential, parliamentary and regional elections
in November and December, last year and re-election of the Members of the visiting delegation in the National Congress of Chile.  of Deputies led by Ms Loreto Carvajal for sponsoring the first ever celebration of the International Day of Yoga in the Chilean Parliament in June 2017.
Welcoming Chile as a member of the International Solar Alliance, the Vice-President expressed the hope for an early ratification of the Framework Agreement by Chile and high level participation from Chile in the International Solar Alliance Founding Conference and Solar Summit scheduled to be held on 11 March, 2018 in New Delhi.

Underscoring the importance of bilateral cooperation in various
sectors such as agriculture, science & technology,renewable energy, space and defence, the Vice-President expressed the hope that the implementation of the Expanded India-Chile Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) would facilitate enhancing of bilateral trade.

Recalling that a nano-satellite built by the students of the University of Chile was launched by Indian Space launch vehicle, he urged Chile to take advantage of cooperation in this sector as  India’s launch vehicles were very reliable and cost effective.

Besides, both the countries can explore the potential for enhanced
cooperation in defence sector. The personnel of Armed Forces of both countries could undertake training exercises in each other’s premier institutions.
India is also ready to share its experience in UN peacekeeping operations with Chile. Moreover, both countries can also work towards people to people cooperation by promoting
tourism, educational exchanges and cultural events. The Vice-President hoped that Ayurveda would be introduced as an alternative medicine in Chile.
The Vice-President shared his views with the visiting delegation about India’s parliamentary democracy and expressed the hope that the Members would benefit from their visit as Parliament is in session.
The delegation led by His Excellency Fidel Espinoza appreciated the
friendly relationships between the two countries and hoped that such visit would strengthen the existing bonds. Recalling that India is the 8th biggest trading partner of Chile, the Members of the delegation stressed the need forfurther strengthening the cooperation in the fields of trade, commerce, defense and culture.
