Air India says no employee will be laid off

air IndiaNEW DELHI : National carrier Air India Thursday said that it was decided in a review meeting with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) that no staff of the airline will be laid off amid the corona virus-triggered economic crisis.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Air India also announced that there has been no reduction in the Basic pay, DA and HRA of any category of employees. Unlike other airlines that have laid off a large number of staffs, no employee of the national carrier will lose their job.
“Recent decisions of AirIndia Board regarding rationalization of staff cost were reviewed in a meeting at  @MoCA_goi  this evening. The meeting reiterated that unlike other carriers which have laid off a large number of their employees, no employee of AirIndia will be laid off,” Air India said.

“Flying crew will be paid as per the actual number of hours flown. As domestic and international operations expand to reach pre-COVID levels and the financial position of Air India improves, the rationalization of allowances will be reviewed,” it tweeted.
“There has been no reduction in the Basic pay, DA and HRA of any category of employees. The rationalization of allowances had to be implemented on account of the difficult financial condition of the airline that was exacerbated by COVID-19,” Air India said in a statement on Twitter.
The statement comes just a day after the airline formed a committee to identify “surplus or redundant resources” which meant employees who can be sent on compulsory leave without pay (LWP). The committee has to submit the report by August 11, reported the news agency ANI Wednesday.

“Air India has constituted a committee for ‘identification of redundant/surplus manpower resources’. The Committee to submit its report to the regional director’s office by August 11 for review.
On July 22, Air India reduced monthly allowances of its employees who have a monthly gross salary of more than Rs 25,000 by up to 50 per cent, according to news agency PTI.

The order said the basic salary and allowances linked to it like industrial dearness allowance (IDA) and house rent allowance (HRA) will remain unchanged. However, for “general category officers”, all other allowances – except the aforementioned ones – would be reduced by 50 per cent, said the order.

“General category staff” and “operators” would get all other allowances decreased by 30 per cent, the order mentioned. Cabin crew members would see their all other allowances like check allowance, flying allowance and quick return allowance reduced by 20 per cent, the order said.
The Air India order said 11 types of allowances – including flying allowance, special pay, wide body allowance, domestic layover allowance and executive flying allowance – for pilots would stand reduced by 40 per cent.
The order said flying allowance would be paid on actual hours flown by an individual pilot in a month. “However, as a special case, all pilots available for flying will be paid fixed 20 hours of flying allowance or actual, whichever is higher in a month, during Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 of 2020-21 on revised flying allowance rate,” it had added.
In another step to rationalise staff costs, Air India issued an internal order on July 14, asking its departmental heads and regional directors to identify the employees, based on various factors such as efficiency, health and redundancy, who will be sent on a compulsory leave without pay (LWP) for up to five years. Moreover, it said employees can voluntarily opt for the LWP scheme too.
The national carrier has a debt of around Rs 70,000 crore and the government started the process to sell it to a private entity in January. Its net loss in 2018-19 was around Rs 8,500 crore.

The aviation sector has been significantly impacted due to the travel restrictions imposed in India and other countries in view of the coronavirus pandemic. All airlines in India have taken cost-cutting measures such as pay cuts, leave without pay (LWP) and firing of employees in order to conserve cash.
