Oath today: Rekha Gupta will be 4th woman Chief Minister of Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has chosen the Chief Minister 11 days after the results of the assembly elections were announced. In the meeting of the BJP Legislature Party held in Delhi, Rekha Gupta has been elected as its leader. She will be sworn in at Ramlila Maidan at 12 noon on Thursday. She has been elected MLA from Shalimar Bagh seat. Rekha will be the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi.
Rekha Gupta is the second woman CM of BJP. She is the fourth woman Chief Minister of the capital after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dixit and Atishi. BJP returned to power in the national capital after 27 years. The party has won 48 out of 70 assembly seats, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party from power.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a grand swearing-in ceremony at Delhi’s iconic Ramlila Maidan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Ministers of many states and other senior leaders will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government.
The new Chief Minister of Delhi will take oath in a grand ceremony at 12.05 am on Thursday. The swearing-in ceremony to be held at the city’s iconic Ramlila Maidan will have three stages – one for the Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and the new Chief Minister, the second for invited religious leaders and the third for MPs and MLAs, more than 200 of whom belong to the BJP and allies. Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal have also been invited.
Rekha Gupta, who started her political career with the BJP’s student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has been the secretary of Delhi University. She originally hails from Julana in Haryana. But her family came to Delhi due to her father’s job. BJP has placed its bet on Rekha Gupta considering the population of women and Vaishya community in Delhi.
At present, no BJP Chief Minister in the country is a woman. Only Diya Kumari in Rajasthan is a woman Deputy Chief Minister. By making Rekha Gupta the CM of Delhi, BJP has sent a good message to women. Fifty-year-old Rekha Gupta was born in 1974 in Nandgarh village of Jind district. Her father was a manager in the State Bank of India. Her family moved to Delhi in 1976 for employment. Rekha was also educated in Delhi. She has studied law. In this election, Rekha Gupta avenged her two previous defeats and defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s Vandana Kumari by a huge margin of more than 29 thousand votes.
Rekha Gupta joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during her student life. Rekha Gupta was elected secretary of the student union of Daulat Ram College of Delhi University. She was elected general secretary of the Delhi University Student Union in 1995-96. Rekha has studied up to LLB from Delhi University. Rekha joined the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 2003-04 and was made secretary of the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. She also held the post of national secretary of the Yuva Morcha from 2004 to 2006. She is currently the General Secretary of Delhi BJP and National Vice President of BJP’s Mahila Morcha. Before this, Rekha has been a councillor from North Pitampura in Delhi Municipal Corporation twice.
