NEW DELHI : “I am also sad that Arvind Kejriwal is resigning today. Today, on behalf of the two crore people of Delhi, I want to say that Delhi has only one Chief Minister and his name is Arvind Kejriwal.” This comment is by Atishi, who has been chosen as Arvind Kejriwal’s successor as Chief Minister. After being elected Chief Minister, Atishi said, “As long as I am the CM, I have only one aim and that is to make Arvind Kejriwal the CM again. She said – “I will work under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal.” After Kejriwal’s resignation announcement, “Aacharana” had already predicted Atishi being made the Chief Minister.
In the form of Atishi, Delhi will soon welcome its youngest and third woman Chief Minister. Atishi has been nominated to replace outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. It follows the legacy of two prominent women leaders – Sheila Dixit and Sushma Swaraj – who have left a significant mark on the governance of the capital.
After being made the chief minister, Atishi (42), an Oxford University alumnus, said – “Arvind Kejriwal put his trust in me. I thank the party for giving me the responsibility.” She said that the people of Delhi are saddened by the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal. I am sad that Arvind Kejriwal is resigning. The new chief minister said – “There is only one chief minister in Delhi… and that is Kejriwal.” The dramatic developments ended four days after he was released on bail in the liquor policy case. Mr Kejriwal met Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at his residence to submit his resignation.
Shortly after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proposed the name of Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi for the post of Delhi Chief Minister, the MLAs unanimously elected her. Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said, it has been decided unanimously in the MLAs’ meeting today that Atishi will have the responsibility of being the Chief Minister of Delhi till the next elections, which we want to hold in October or November. Atishi has also been elected the leader of the AAP Legislative Party. Kejriwal chose Atishi in the AAP Legislative Party meeting held at his residence. He met the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and submitted her resignation.
Addressing the media for the first time after being elected the leader of the AAP Legislative Party, Atishi said that she does not want the people of Delhi to congratulate her. I do not want the people of Delhi to congratulate me. It is a sad day when the beloved Chief Minister of Delhi has to resign. I will urge the people of Delhi to elect him as the Chief Minister again in the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, who had leveled allegations against the assault on Vibhav Kumar at the Chief Minister’s residence, posted a video on Instagram on Atishi being made the CM and said, ‘Today is a very sad day for Delhi. Today, the Chief Minister of Delhi is being made a woman whose family fought a long battle to save terrorist Afzal Guru from hanging. Her parents wrote mercy petitions to the Honorable President to save terrorist Afzal Guru. According to them, Afzal Guru was innocent and was framed as part of a political conspiracy. May God save Delhi!’
After obtaining a master’s degree from Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College, and a second master’s degree from Oxford University on a Chevening Scholarship, Atishi has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party since its inception. In 2013, when the party made her a member of the committee to draft its manifesto, she later made policies for schools and also implemented them. Atishi’s husband Praveen Singh is a researcher and educator. He is associated with institutions like Sadbhavna Institute of Public Policy. Praveen Singh has studied from IIT Delhi and then also from IIM Ahmedabad. He worked in the corporate sector for about 8 years. After this, he entered social service. He is rarely seen in public.
The AAP convenor had announced his decision to step down as head of the Delhi government on Sunday after he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the liquor policy case. The bail conditions barred Kejriwal from performing essential duties such as signing papers. Kejriwal has requested that the elections scheduled for February 2025 be held in November. Soon after being named chief minister, Atishi told reporters that “the people of Delhi are determined to make Arvind Kejriwal the chief minister again” and “this is an emotional moment for the party and the people of Delhi.” Atishi said she will “take care” of Delhi until Arvind Kejriwal forms the next government.
