Delhi Police files case against TMC MP Mahua over her ‘pajama’ remark
NEW DELHI : A case has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra for insulting the dignity of a woman for posting on social media on National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma.
“Based on Ms Sharma’s complaint, the Special Cell of Delhi Police on Sunday registered an FIR under Section 79 (word, gesture or act with intent to insult the dignity of a woman) of the Indian Justice Code, the new Criminal Code that replaced the Indian Penal Code.
A case has been registered under Section 79 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) i.e. insulting the dignity of a woman. Mahua Moitra has been accused of making indecent remarks on National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma in a post on a social media site.
The Women’s Commission had lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police on Friday (July 5). The Special Cell has registered a case on Sunday (July 7) and started investigation. The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell will now take information about the social media platform X handle from which abusive language was used against Rekha Sharma.
What is the matter?
Actually, Women’s Commission Chairperson Rekha Sharma had recently reached the spot regarding the Hathras incident. A video of this came on social media. On Thursday, Mahua Moitra commented on the video of Rekha Sharma reaching the Hathras stampede site. The video showed a man walking behind Rekha Sharma and holding an umbrella over her. The video has been shared on the social media platform X, in which a social media user raised the question that why Rekha Sharma cannot carry her own umbrella.
What did Mahua Moitra say?
Responding to this comment, Mahua Moitra said, “She (Rekha Sharma) is very busy handling her boss’s pajamas.” Now there is a controversy about this. The case has been registered and Delhi’s Special Cell is investigating it.
The MP from Krishnanagar in West Bengal, who was disqualified from the Lok Sabha last year following the ‘cash-question’ controversy and re-elected this year, had on Thursday made the remark in response to a video of the women’s commission chief meeting women injured in the Hathras stampede in which 121 people were killed.
The video showed someone holding an umbrella for Ms Sharma and Ms Moitra had made a reference to “pyjamas” in a post on X, which kicked up a controversy. She later deleted the post and the police have sought a detailed account from the social media expert. The National Commission for Women (NCW) had on Friday taken cognizance of the remark and sought a case against Ms Moitra, but the Trinamool MP remained aggressive. Responding to a post made by the NCW on X, she had tagged the Delhi Police to take immediate action and arrest her, even telling them that she was in Nadia in West Bengal.
“If you need me for quick arrest in the next 3 days, I am in Nadia, West Bengal,” Ms Moitra wrote to the Delhi Police. She also posted Ms Sharma’s previous tweets in which the women commission chief called RJD chief Lalu Yadav and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi fools and made a joke against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, referring to “suhaag raat”. Ms Moitra also asked the Delhi Police to take action against the “serial offender”.
The Trinamool leader was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December last year based on an Ethics Committee report on the alleged ‘cash-for-questions’ allegations against her. She was accused of accepting bribes, including Rs 2 crore in cash and “luxury gifts” from businessman Darshan Hiranandani, to ask questions critical of the Narendra Modi government in Parliament. The agencies are also probing that case.
